The SIGMA Space completed in August 2024 in Shanghai, embodies SIGMA's philosophy of “Beyond the technology, is Art.” This innovative space harmoniously blends technology, nature, and art, showcasing SIGMA’s craftsmanship and core principles of being, crafting, and seeing. Through its reception, product display, and gallery areas, the space creates an emotional connection with visitors while reflecting the brand’s Japanese Aizu factory legacy. Every detail, from tactile materials to seamless spatial transitions, aims to tell SIGMA’s story and highlight its precision and artistry.
The designer creates three conceptual spaces: "The Ways of Being" (reception area, reflecting brand culture), "The Ways of Crafting" (display zone, embodying craftsmanship), and "The Ways of Seeing" (gallery, honoring artistic creation). These functional areas seamlessly interconnect.
Water symbolizes smooth production flow, ensuring efficient assembly with minimal waste. SIGMA maintains integrated production, with all parts made in Japan, unified by a shared pursuit of perfection.
The north facade features an external shading system, balancing privacy and natural light for the gallery while adapting to seasonal changes. Indoors, the gallery employs Kvadrat's Acoustics system for seamless, sound-absorbing walls, aligning with the precision of "The Ways of Crafting" and the brand's meticulous ethos.
Breaking Boundaries to Deliver Value
The most functional element in the reception area is the transparent repair room, where technicians service products in full view. This open, face-to-face interaction bridges the gap between SIGMA and its customers. The repair room walls are lined with modular drawers, meticulously organized for efficient part retrieval, mirroring the precision of Aizu Factory's craftsmanship.
Beyond lies the product experience zone, dominated by a floor-to-ceiling lens display wall. Designed with triangular columns and customized lens bayonet adapters, it traces SIGMA's optical evolution: from early lens models to the Contemporary, Art, Sports, and Cine series. At its base, a limestone plinth—embedded with fossils and bearing weathering marks—stands as a timeless testament to enduring quality, preserved for visitors to appreciate.
