The theory of sound wave propagation was developed by the Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens in 1678, which has impacted the acoustics development in the last century. This cinema design drew inspiration from the refraction of sound waves during transmission. The design concept is carried out consistently throughout the interior and created this unprecedented design. The designers have visualised how sound waves are being transmitted in the air by various design elements. They’ve enriched the design by adding different shapes and angles, so to create more layers of spacing in the space. At the entrance to the cinema, you can see the array of gold and dark gray sound wave-like zigzag decorations on the ceiling extending towards the corridor. The “V-shape” of the installation on the ceiling imitates the shape of the sound as it refracts. Some of them extend from the ceiling to the ground. After hitting the ground, they quickly reflect back to the ceiling, engaging the audience with the spatial relationship of this refraction. Walking along the corridor to the auditorium, you will see a row of gift showcasing cabinets on the right side. The look of the cabinets and the shape of the sound waves on the ceiling are in a consistent shape, making it easy to display film-related products and gifts. In the IMAX theater, the designers integrate the ‘sound waves’ concept on the wall and the ceiling with different color combinations.
