Located in Karuizawa, a mountain resort town in Nagano, Japan, Shishi-Iwa House is a two-storey restorative retreat that reinforces the relationship between nature, architecture and human connection. Developed by HDHP GK, the genesis of Shishi-Iwa House began with an interest to use architecture as a means to provide a sanctuary and promote intellectual creativity through architecture, art and design. The objective is to have a place to reflect, restore and reconnect, providing a respite from the increasingly invasive digital world. Celebrating exceptional craftsmanship with simple materials and biophilic designs, the property also strives to reduce excess and create a sustainable environment that honours the fundamental connection of human and nature.

With pioneering work in both paper tube and mass timber construction, Shigeru Ban is renowned for his structural and material innovations as well as commitment to humanitarian relief projects worldwide. Given the common vision, Shigeru Ban was chosen to be the architect and interior designer for the project. In response to the site’s context, Ban experimented with the use of natural materials and came up with a never-been-used construction methodology. From the construction to the furniture and interior detailing, every detail was carefully considered to achieve a bespoke atmosphere within the property.
