Shanghai Museum of Glass (SHMOG) was a former glass factory on the edge of Shanghai city until the 1990s. The vision is to build a constantly evolving living museum. Instead of erasing the past, SHMOG integrated existing structures and elements to extend its industrial legacy into a cultural destination which now houses 20 thematic halls, including permanent and temporary exhibitions, live glass shows and glass-inspired art spaces. China has undergone economic and societal paradigm shift and the excess of industrial spaces happened to offer a solution to the growing demand for cultural experiences.
Through transforming old glass-manufacturing site into new cultural attraction, SHMOG has helped breathing new life into the desolate industrial district with contemporary approaches of urban regeneration. The manufacturing sites and equipments turned into rich contents at the permanent exhibitions and inspirations for many curated experiences at the museum park. In addition to conversion of the old factory, new spaces are created each year to enrich the visitor journey, including contemporary art and design exhibitions, installations and performance spaces. Between 2018 and 2019 SHMOG incorporated various new spaces, including a museum plaza, outdoor event spaces and a contemporary art exhibition. By building new immersive glass-themed experiences on top of the memories of old factory, SHMOG continues to create meaningful connections between present and past, people and place.
