The Western-style building “Columbia Country Club,” designed by an American architect in 1924 and is now selected as an excellent historical building in Shanghai, has been renovated while preserving its appearance at that time. It is an ecological project newly landed from Japan “Shangahi Tsutaya Bookstore."
We aimed to create new value and vitality in the space through flow line plans, bookshelves, and materials in response to architecture with a history of approximately 100 years. In addition, the concept of "aesthetic education" nurtures sensibilities, while pursuing "comfort" that is created at the point where the goodness of space, landscape, people, and functions overlap. We also proposed the "lifestyle that makes us want something" through the display of books and goods.
The first floor is created with the theme of "acquiring intelligence", and the entire space is composed of "harmony" based on the background of historical elements such as pillars, fireplaces, and decorative walls at that time. On the second floor, with the theme of "improving the aesthetic sense" such as art and crafts, a new landscape was created by using materials and shape that "contrast" with architecture.
I hope that the Tsutaya Bookstore will continue to be a special place that stimulates the creativity of more people in Japan and China, and creates new experiences and discoveries that can only be experienced at a real store.
