"Serendie Street Yokohama" is a co-creation space designed as part of Mitsubishi Electric’s DX Innovation Hub.
The 2,500 sqm floor is designed as a single large 'street' with various zones. Obstacles are intentionally designed to facilitate unexpected encounters. Semicircular forms create subtle detours, encouraging gatherings, while S-shaped volumes alter spatial orientation, drawing movement inward. These design features blur the boundary between circulation and occupation, promoting intuitive and exploratory engagement with the space.
The design is based on three core concepts:
Circular – Existing interior materials are creatively reinterpreted. Ceiling panels and grid ceilings are repurposed as wall finishes, and OA flooring is converted into a bench — demonstrating sustainable spatial transformation.
Hackable – The space is designed with flexibility and user agency in mind. An L-angle ceiling grid provides a versatile framework for attaching lighting, curtains, signage, and experimental installations. Adjustable pillars at 600mm intervals along all walls, along with tension-mounted freestanding columns, enable spatial reconfiguration to meet evolving needs.
Japanese Atmosphere – While driven by technology, the space emphasizes materiality and craftsmanship. Solid wood furnishings convey warmth and authenticity, and a 4.5-tatami tea room serves as both a symbolic and functional anchor, blending cultural identity with innovation.
By allowing these elements to coexist organically, the space fosters "intentional chaos," where people, data, and technology converge—sparking co-creation and unexpected discoveries.
