Perched on the 24th floor of the Nhow Hotel in Amsterdam, Selva Restaurant serves Latin American cuisine in a lush, tropical setting.

Space & Challenges
The space originally felt cold and industrial, dominated by a striking glass façade designed by OMA, the studio led by Rem Koolhaas. With panoramic views of highways and new developments, the challenge was to soften this stark urban setting and create a vibrant, nature-infused retreat that contrasts the rigidity of its surroundings.

Innovation
The design of Selva ( meaning jungle in Spanish) tries to create the right scenario for its Latin American culinary offer. Design and gastronomy blend into a full sensory experience, transforming the existing industrial space, into a lush urban oasis, where nature and architecture merge, with an environment rich in organic shapes, natural materials, and vibrant hues.
The design reinterprets biophilic principles, using natural textures and modern materials to balance tradition and innovation. A floating installation, inspired by tropical rivers, combines reflective surfaces and hanging greenery, immersing guests in a rainforest-like ambience.

Functionality
Every design element serves a functional purpose, enhancing both comfort and user experience. The spatial layout creates fluid pathways, evoking the organic movement of a jungle, while curved wooden partitions form intimate areas without compromising openness. Natural materials such as wicker and rope soften the dominance of glass, filtering light to create a warm and inviting ambiance. The vibrant ceramic-clad bar not only stands as a striking visual element but also seamlessly connects different areas, integrating the open kitchen into the restaurant’s dynamic flow.

Creativity
Selva is a celebration of Latin American landscapes, rich in color, texture, and artistic detail. Every detail and material choice tells a story of vibrancy and abundance. The color palette, inspired by tropical flora and fauna, and the ceramic details referencing traditional textiles, reinforce the space’s unique identity. Beyond aesthetics, the design stimulates the senses, making architecture an immersive experience.

Eco-Social Impact
Sustainability guides the design with responsibly sourced, durable materials. Wicker elements and greenery partially cover the glass façade, casting organic shadows. Combined with integrated greenery, the project underscores its commitment to environmental consciousness. Moreover, the restaurant’s atmosphere celebrates Latin American heritage, fostering a deeper appreciation for its traditions through design. In an urban landscape dominated by steel and concrete, Selva introduces a narrative of balance between the artificial and the natural.
