SCADfit is constructed within the ground floor of a precast concrete parking garage in the middle of The Hive, SCAD’s new student-housing complex. The fitness center is designed to complement the university's wellness programs and create spaces unique to each programmatic component like state-of-the-art cardio and strength fitness spaces as well as spin, Pilates, and yoga classrooms. SCADfit is bisected by the entry lobby where custom, salvaged wood flooring and wall installations made of recycled gym floors combine with metal panels to set the tone for a mix of warm materiality and an industrial aesthetic. On each side of the main lobby, elevated platforms frame the fitness equipment and workout areas. The palette and finishes are artistically inspired with a black-on-gray, wood-grain print pattern on the rubber gym to the bold contrast of dark gray and yellow painted walls. The locker rooms are a mix of classic industrial-style white lockers with pop art-style over scaled numbers on each. The locker rooms connect to the individual private shower facilities via a hallway that features custom, full-wall murals created by SCAD artists. In addition to the main fitness center, SCADfit also has an adjacent juice and fresh-food bar aptly named beeFUEL, paying homage to the university’s mascot. beeFUEL is separate from the main fitness center but visually accessible through a large wall of pink-tinted glass. The juice bar is housed within six typical shipping container shells.
