This is a conversion of a 19th century military Drill Hall in Central London. The building had been used for many years as a "feeding station" for the Metropolitan Police as they assembled for major events in the City. Our conversion was to an Academy for the international hairdressing brand, Vidal Sassoon, and created Teaching Spaces for up to 124 students, many of them from overseas. The project brought together three separate Training Facilities and the Head Office function for the first time in the company's history creating a single campus. Apart from the obvious stylistic requirement of a fashion brand like Sassoon, there were many practical challenges. At the centre of the space is an acoustically isolated Theatre for up to 120 people with the Student Lounge sitting on top, near to the apex of the original Victorian glass roof. The project successfully manages the arrival of up to 120 models twice a day all of whom need to be checked in, registered and allocated to a Student and Classroom. Circulation is simple, obvious and transparent and wherever possible language problems have been overcome through the use of colour coding and pictograms.
