Sandpaper & Silk is a Modern-Indian penthouse that draws its inspiration from the family's rich heritage of textile craftsmanship - the artistry of refined weaves, motifs, and textures found in textiles crafted over generations by the family. The design seamlessly combines traditional Indian elements with modern aesthetics, using a mix of woods, marbles, and intricate details to create a warm and functional living space as the family transitions to urban living.
The penthouse was originally a blank canvas with beige marble floors and teak veneer doors provided by the builder. By adding touches of maroon marble and blue stained veneer, we transformed these materials into something new, aiming to reduce waste and contribute to environmental sustainability.
The living space is designed to welcome large gatherings, featuring a luxurious sectional couch, armchairs, and a loveseat. Mid-century modern armchairs were done using a blend of leather and printed fabric upholstery, creating a distinctive look. An artistic touch was added to the dining area with a hand-painted scene of cranes in flight. The living space is designed for gatherings, featuring comfortable seating and a unique blend of materials in the upholstery. In the dining area, the hand-painted scene of cranes in flight among celestial blooms, evokes a Renaissance-inspired atmosphere.
The dry kitchen in this home is designed to be both functional and stylish, paying tribute to the concept of efficient storage. A large waterfall breakfast counter made of a mix of five marble varieties and wood serves as the centerpiece, defining the space. Surrounding the kitchen, a spacious storage unit houses built-in appliances and features textured veneer, reeded glass, and a subtle mosaic border along the top edge.
In the master suite, a blend of materials such as maroon-toned leather, distressed wood, and silk panels on the headboard creates a unique and inviting atmosphere. Intricate wood beading and delicate zari patterns showcase a mix of styles and eras, adding richness to the space. A Sadarahalli stone column extends into angular wall shelves above the dresser, complementing the warm elements of the room.
The master suite and kid's bedroom each have their own distinct character. The master suite focuses on materiality, while the kid's room features playful elements inspired by wildlife and safaris. The bed in the kid's room boasts a fabric and leather headboard depicting a vivid undersea scene, complete with a giant fish chasing a smaller one and bubble-shaped bedside lights. Imaginative details like a bird made of hand-stained veneer perched on the wardrobe and a study table shaped like a hungry crocodile resting on a stone add whimsy to the space.
Creating and bringing this space to life has been a journey of honouring a vision and infusing it with personality, resulting in a home that tells a unique and engaging story
