R14 restaurant fills a void in Estonia for a restaurant that is casual, a bit upscale but not uptight while making no compromise in food quality. The interior design, pricing and food design all follow the same principle, creating a solid identity. The restaurant also functions as a wine shop and vinoteque which adds to the flavor.
The interior is designed so that it uses extensively local handcraft, materials and traditions for a conteporary result. The restaurant has a deliberately exaggerated warm atmosphere to counteract for the harsh northern winter season. While material and texture richness is one of the key points in the design, another one is variety. The interior elements are deliberately chosen to bring variation, color and detail into the interior. The warm and detailed interior is designed to contrast with the solid and grey limestone industrial building where the restaurant is located. One of the design principles was not to add anything to the existing building structure. Everything is built within the cavernous historic space.
The interior is designed to be understood emotionally, to create a warm, but still contemporary mood, be detailed and rich but still easily comprehendable for everyone.
