Interaction and meeting between all users have been key in the design for the renovation of the Building for Dentistry. The renovated building combines theory and educational practice, research and patient care.

During the renovation it was the challenge to create a friendly and accessible building, where visitors naturally can find their way to their therapist or specialist. The old Dentistry building was gloomy, dark, hierarchical and inaccessible. Due to the extensive renovation, the building is now light and accessible where people easily walk inside.

The renovation involved a new build project and refurbishment of 6 floors, with the routing within the building being re-defined. A clear and inviting clinic square in the form of a central atrium has been created as a beating heart of the building. Patients care is central to the first three floors, education and workplaces form the top three floors (including a.o. a reception desk, waiting rooms, restoration, study center, phantom room, skill lab and research lab).

The brutalistic concrete architecture of the original building has gained a new quality, just like the detailed stairwells, tiled floors and wall tiles. The handcrafted concrete core walls, give character and orientation. The precision of the dentists contrasts well with the robustness of the building, whereas the palette of dark and light, fresh, smooth materials and colors completes the reborn character of the tough building.
