Concerned by the space and function occupied by cars in urban spaces nowadays, Marchi Architects - Renault’s 2016 competition winners - designed a portable house in order to give a new meaning to cars, fully integrating mobility into a living space. For that, the Renault Symbioz was conceived with similar aspects with regards to function and aesthetics to form a cohesive unit. The architects maintained a traditional layout for living spaces, with the living room and kitchen on the ground floor and the bedroom and bathroom on the first floor.

With regards to the connection between house and car, the concept car takes on new functions as it turns into an extra/mobile room for the house, which can be integrated in different ways, such as: an extra room outside; an extension to the living room; a quiet room isolated from the noise; or as a mobile living room placed on the rooftop. The car within the house brings different spatial qualities into it and consequently into spaces occupied by cars around the world, changing their current connotation. The possibility of Renault Symbioz as a module in a vertical array in a dense context would allow more public spaces with less cars. The use of cars on a day-to-day basis in areas other than transportation would go from 25% (present percentage) to 100%.
