Pop Golf fuses crazy golf with spectacular Pop Video-themed holes, serving up the hottest hits and delicious drinks from the slick mezzanine bar, with a sound system that will blow your mind, not your ears. Designed to bring music lovers together, Pop Golf harnesses the zeitgeist of pop music to create a new franchise that will always be interesting. Purpose-built for social sharing, the music-video themed set design combines gameplay packed with surprise and delight, Insta-inspiration and the ultimate TikTok backdrop.‍ With the mini-golf course design, we aimed to strike the perfect balance between cool design aesthetic and challenging and fun playability building on the brief to deliver layers of discovery and joy at every touch-point. From a luminescent infinity box inspired by Drake’s ‘Hotline Bling’ music video to a retro ‘80s Neon Club design complete with boomboxes and suspended cassette tapes, each hole is dedicated to a pop sub-genre and totally unique. Pop art-inspired colour blocking adds to the immersive quality of each hole, adding contrast so you feel as if you’re moving between dramatically different pop music worlds. To ensure super fun as well as challenging playability, all holes underwent computer simulations before fabrication. The final round of testing was carried out by world golf champions who made sure all skill levels were catered for. Owner Allan Saud and Creative Studio Smith & Devil aimed to thread the pop music theme through every touchpoint in a meaningful and memorable way, with Pop Golf’s music-first ethos bolstered by forward-thinking playlist curation from industry experts Tin Drum, showcasing the best new tracks, and exclusive content from up and coming acts. In collaboration with Middlesex Sound, the ‘sound lounge’ provides a high-quality audio experience in-between rounds, and reactive audio technology adds wizardry to gameplay. At the bar, Pop Golf put ethically minded, independent drinks and snacks suppliers at the top of the menu, choosing to stock brands like Flawsome–who turn wonky fruit into wonderful juice with a solution that’s fairer for farmers. Cocktails, drinks and snacks with all the taste and less of the waste. With the design fabrication, aspects that were required to be newly built were kept to a minimum and sustainable materials were selected as much as possible. By collaborating closely with Smith & Devil right from the early concept stage, we were able to apply a strong sense of brand to the experience and design, right through to completion. There was a depth of thought to the process that is reflected in the quality of the end result – a venue that is interesting and a memorable experience, with or without crazy golf. As a studio, we’re mad about music as well as design, so to work on a project that blends the two has been a very exciting endeavour! Pop Golf has been featured in Frame Magazine, Dreamingless Magazine, Retail Design Blog and Secret London to name a few.
