Originally designed by KPF, the mixed-use Plaza 66 has been in operation since 2001. Comprising two office towers connected by a retail podium, the development is set along Nanjing Xi Lu, one of the busiest shopping districts in Shanghai. The main objective of the refurbishment was to ensure the project maintain the highest international design standards and continue to attract upmarket tenants and shoppers. The renovation focused on the interiors of the retail public spaces, as well as the building lobbies, elevator lobbies, elevator cabs, and toilets. The transformation also included the conversion of basement mechanical and back-of-house spaces to retail and public space and the addition of an escalator to the middle of the arcade from the ground floor to the basement. The modernization focused on an updated rich and warm material palette and lighting that provides a livelier and lighter feel while preserving the first-class experience. The design respects the existing geometry of the building spaces, while remaining sensitive to the materials, sculpting and articulating them in a beautiful way. Several elements prominently featured in the refurbished interiors include: beige limestone lining on the floor, concave panels of white Calacatta marble set into the retail lobby walls, perforated bronze paneling in the elevator lobby walls, and white oak cladding on the columns.
