In a unique way, the Pharmacy at Schultheiss Quartier Berlin integrates the latest technology while at the same time making it possible to experience the tradition of the pharmacy as a place where people get competent and trustworthy help. In order to achieve both, a new spatial idea was developed that fundamentally changed the classic layout of a pharmacy. The orientation of the sales room towards a long counter was abandoned in favour of an open concept. Instead of following architecturally predetermined paths, the customer can move freely and although there is a round cash-desk island standing in the middle of the room to safeguard privacy during the payment process, personal advice is provided throughout the entire sales area. The stock of goods, traditionally located in the opaquely demarcated back area of the pharmacy, is centrally located in the front room. The fully automated high rack has become the pharmacy’s science fiction kind of heart, whose 'beating' can be observed through a glass wall from a small bench opposite, while the haptic and visual quality of the fixtures and furniture designed by studio aisslinger, and the natural colours that define the room, create a feeling of calm and security. This atmospheric design continues in the back office. Only employees who like to be at their workplace are able to establish the relaxed personal relationship with the customer the pharmacy depends on to keep its character as a place of personal, trusting advice.
