In 2016 the reallocation of patient rooms in the Radboud University Medical Centre (RUMC) was expelling the existing Ronald McDonald Family Rooms from within the children’s hospital. At this moment it created the unique opportunity to rethink the location, design and needs. It would be a place where every parent, brother and sister of the little patients can go to.
The RMD Living Room is a concept, it is not a fixed format with some furniture. Within a RMDH and Family Room, the organization determines the house rules. This also means that other regulations apply to the furniture and finishes. No white jackets are allowed, only volunteers who are recruited by the RMHC are permitted in and contribute significantly to the feeling of being outside the hospital. EGM architects designed the outer shell and concept for this new living room.
It consists of 2 Floating Pebbles with 3 levels, at the end of the central corridor in the hospital. Because floating, the’ve created additional floorspace and created an unique statement for the RMDH goals; create an enchanting environment for those who are in desperate need voor solace and rest. To translate a dreamy concept into a workable interior design is a challenge Thoben & Minten has taken on full heartedly.
