AAArchitects was asked to redesign the souterrain of the Iraqi Embassy in The Netherlands, to a passport office. It was originally used as a depot. To add to the functionality of the office setup and make more efficient use of the available space, parts of the building were deconstructed and the existing room structure was adjusted. The space was reorganised into two units; a waiting area and an office. These units are separated by a security counter with three windows, where the passport handling takes place. The glazing between the two units allows the space to continue as one and this is emphasized by the use of the same colour and material palette for both. The circulation space leading to the souterrain was renovated to include a larger staircase with unique light installation signifying to the visitor that they are entering a different “world” than the one at street level.
