Para Gastroteka is a Pincho (Pintxos) bar located in Ankara-Turkey, serving modern European cuisine coming from the Basque region-Northern Spain. Pinchos are small snacks served in individual portions similar to tapas, but they are spiked to a piece of bread with a skewer. They are usually eaten in bars and taverns; they have a strong socializing component.

Most Pincho bars have a similar characteristic with an open-buffet/bar layout, against wooden elements and moldings. We took these as basics to our project and let it play a major role in the development of our concept. To recreate the traditional experience in a modern manner, we created a systematic wall and ceiling application spreading across the entire space and turning it into an architectural element. The modules comprise several wooden panels with moldings at different shapes and sizes. These panels not only serve as a tool to trace our concept back to its original roots but also defines the entire space.

At certain parts, we hanged mirrors that were fitted into similar wooden panels, creating a more dynamic and energic atmosphere. These complement each other with the background and create a unified visual form. Apart from the framed mirror panels, we have also introduced large mirrored walls that are placed behind the dining area to reflect the botanical garden that is just outside in the open space; allowing the beautiful greenery inside.

Bold colors were used to create a contrasting effect and to break away from the neutral background. Orange and blue tones were chosen for seating elements such as chairs and the lounge seating. To create a contrast between all of the wooden elements, we chose different palettes for different applications; the walls and the ceiling panels were produced in warm colour while the furniture were produced in a much darker wood. The floor is covered in modular tiles that are composed of little mosaic ceramic pieces. The pattern created in each module is repeated throughout the space.

Pincho bars are regarded as a cornerstone of local culture and society due to its strong social component. To carry this culture and behavior onto our project, we designed the bar as the main element and focus of the restaurant; as it is the place where gathering and socializing is most ocurrent.

The structure above the bar is designed in an intricate and complex form offering several functions; the hanging elements at different levels are intertwined with it each other creating shelves for bottles/glasses and plants, as well as serving as lighting elements. The final design successfully carries out the tradtional Pincho experience while meeting todays standards and expectations of its guests.
