Pacific Landing is a mixed-use, Net Zero, LEED Platinum, and 100% affordable housing project designed for individuals with disabilities and those with limited incomes. Located on Lincoln Boulevard in Santa Monica, this 4-story, 42,000-square-foot building replaces a former gas station on a 14,160-square-foot corner lot previously contaminated. Developed by Community Corp of Santa Monica, the project features 37 residences tailored to families in need.
The architectural design of Pacific Landing reinterprets traditional home imagery to present a fresh perspective on affordable housing. The building's massing is articulated with a combination of smaller components, interspersed with voids and green spaces, enhancing both visual appeal and functional efficiency. The interior courtyard, beautifully landscaped, serves as a serene retreat for residents, offering a safe and inviting environment with all units accessible from this central space.
The courtyard features a colored mat at the accessible playground, ensuring a vibrant and safe play area for children. The atrium, adorned with decorative lights, brightens the space and contributes to a more pleasant living experience. Residents benefit from a recreational room in an industrial style, complemented by modern gym amenities, which provide engaging spaces for socializing and staying active.
Unit interiors are designed to redefine the typical affordable housing look. Brightly lit units feature a mix of stylish tiles in the kitchen and bathroom, adding character and vibrancy to these spaces. Additionally, the unit balconies are enhanced with colored walls, creating an appealing outdoor extension of the living area that adds a splash of personality and color to each unit.
The building also incorporates state-of-the-art sustainable features, including electric heat pump water heaters, high-efficiency electric split system heat pump heating and cooling, and high-performing insulation. A solar photovoltaic system on-site generates electricity, offsetting approximately 37% of the building's energy usage and achieving 44% less energy consumption compared to an average code-compliant structure. These features make Pacific Landing not only resource-efficient but also a leader in promoting healthier living environments and sustainability goals.
