The brief for OTAKU was to represent a growing local brand inspired by its waterfront context with a combination of warm, comfortable seating arrangements in a novel, unconventional setting.

The aesthetic of the existing locations is one that is clean and minimal with derivations from contemporary Japanese design. Inspired by it’s sea view context, this new space references the style of Otaku’s pre-existing locations, with added comfort, warmth and fluidity.

Carrying through the principles of wabi-sabi, this new space embraces the idea of ‘wisdom in natural beauty’; exposing the imperfection in raw materials such as wood, concrete and stone. Inspired by Tadao Ando architecture, flawed elements are left untouched, with emphasis on the process of forms taking shape. Recycled materials made from natural elements are explored, introducing colour and patterns in an organic way. Vintage and restored furniture are housed, showcasing the items’ history.

Driven by its context and irregular shape, the design of this new space is unbounded by convention. Fluid forms feature throughout the space, placed against crisp orthogonal volumes - alluding to the essence of the waterfront. Reflective materials and intentional lighting will allow for playful interactions of light and shadow.; creating an emphasis on depth and ever-changing patterns.

Californian burl wood partially clad around exposed beams accentuates key areas, and large plants create natural divisions to allow for privacy. Upholstered and varied seating types ensure an inviting space for everyone - all the while retaining the simplistic, authenticity of Otaku.
