JingAn district is the most urbanized suburb in central Shanghai. The Orange Loft sits in a 1900s lane house, among a number of other houses from different times and of different architectural styles. Such combination is typical in the formal French concession of Shanghai.   The Orange Loft is more than a living space – it is also a space for gathering. The owner wanted to use it as a salon for exhibit photography works and for photographers and guests to socialize. The open space on the rooftop is perfect for such scenario. The original timber beam structures were preserved. The contrast between new material and old, light and shadow bring dynamics to the space and became the visual focus point.   Based on the client’s life style, the design team came up with a series of scenes which well accommodated the requests and left possibilities for further adjustments, makes the space more flexible to what future living space could be.
