Over 90 years in the making, One Wall Street has been reborn as a residential tower with a bespoke lobby worthy of its storied history. One Wall Street was designed by “Architect of the Century” Ralph Walker and completed in 1930. Monumental rather than monolithic, the vertical fluting motifs of the tower created a sense of rhythm and relief to the eye. The building’s impressive hand-carved limestone façade and intricate chevron detailing made it one of the great Art Deco masterpieces of New York City, in league with the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building.
With a collaborative team led by Macklowe Properties, MdeAS pays homage to Ralph Walker's iconic Art Deco design while bringing One Wall Street into the contemporary era with an updated lobby that has been thoughtfully detailed and beautifully crafted. By re-purposing the original structure through this ambitious conversion, the embodied energy of the building has been preserved while new housing stock has been created for the city. True to its Landmark status, One Wall Street has been fully restored as a masterpiece for all times.
With an array of luxe materials and unique details, residents are immersed in a one-of-a-kind living experience. Drawn from iconic Art Deco patterns and textures, the interiors of the lobby were manufactured with cutting-edge technology and meticulous handwork, resulting in intricately detailed finishes that give a modern twist to classic design elements.
The lobby’s grand entrance from Broadway opens onto a custom mosaic floor inspired by the Greco-Roman wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Set in a “broken teeth” style that evokes a sense of the ancient, the custom tile pattern follows the contours of each room and features contrasting Nero Marquina and white Carrara marble. Fluted Shadow Vein limestone and Grigio Carnico walls wrap the lobby entry.
The lobby vestibule is flanked by a dramatic tapestry inspired by the line-and-form concepts pioneered by Geometric Abstractionist Sonia Delaunay. It was designed and developed in collaboration with Madda Studio, a collective of artisan weavers in Oaxaca, Mexico, as a custom piece for the space. Within the main lobby, richly patterned Sapele Pommele mahogany walls are accented with fluted trims drawn from Geometric Abstractionism. This motif carries into the elevator cabs where the Sapele Pommele mahogany is accented by geometric stainless steel reveals and the doors feature a custom Art Deco-inspired pattern.
Finally, the lobby is grounded by a glass centerpiece table perched atop a 2,000 lb. Rosso Alicante marble sphere. The fluted stainless steel edge ties into the main lobby motif, while the marble is mirrored by an elegant Rosso Alicante fireplace within the lobby lounge. Above, a custom chandelier features fluted, frosted glass that echoes the building’s fluted façade.
