One Night Only is a contemporary American diner that was birthed as a breeding ground for gastronomic experimentation. Its name was inspired by and intended to reference the transient nature of a roadtrip, where travellers would check in to a motel for one night only. Within this narrative, traveller’s patronise diners to find comfort in food and as a place of rest after long hours of travelling. Our intentions while designing One Night Only was to create a space reminiscent of a diner, but not in a thematic sense. We were interested in experimenting with the idea of what a diner should feel like and to communicate how one would experience a diner while on a roadtrip. The interior of the diner was structured using traditional elements that constituted a diner — booths, flooring, etc, but given a contemporary twist which altogether corresponds with how a diner should look and feel without being too explicit, whilst simultaneously giving edge to its identity.
