Seongsu-dong, heterogeneous coexistence of a variety of cultures In consideration of the particular location of Seongsu-dong, the place of coexistence of heterogeneous cultures such as the forest-storage, manufactures-venture companies, oldness-newness, we approached its depth growing mature or ripe with time and the intrinsic value of consistency along with diversity. Thus, we intended to highlight new standards of experiencing Obaltan based on restrained aesthetics reducing complex decoration and redundant elements, instead of giving splendid stimulation. When stepping inside, the light with a pattern structure of the ceiling is refracted towards every corner in company with the ponderous stone embracing the whole view of the space, evoking multifarious emotions at the entrance with the shadow full of vivacity. For the waiting space, we considered creating a special atmosphere and bring an ample visual effect attracting attention by placing an objet that maintains balance in the space. At the entrance, the wide view with ceiling H: 2500 & partition H:1400 enjoying privacy that is not fully open. The wall height of the service zone is set at H:2100 to make the following space look like a connected one, enhancing efficiency by separating, connecting and separating again. The luminous ceiling on the right side with H:2300 & partition H:1200 creates a cozy space. The level difference brings diverse touches in space functionality, space and peace of mind. To prevent damage against the cart moving, the partitions are made of metal and tiles, while the wall has metal waist molding to facilitate easy repair and maintenance. Before design, three strategies of division, functionality and open/ closed character were set. By maximizing the private atmosphere using diverse shapes such as vertical/horizontal, open/closed character, flat/3D and lines and sides by lighting, the expression evoked a sense of space with beautiful balance. This design based on gaze direction consideration, level difference of partitions and height of ceiling aims to bring psychological stability to people regardless of the location of the seat. To give a balanced experience with natural switch between the exteriority and interiority full of natural and cohesive touches, we considered long-lasting design making the façade, interior wall, Information Desk and the floor a single mass made of Macheon stone. We intended to create a space giving a variety of experiences that can be enjoyed from various angles of each seat, in company with stability rather than luxury, and the local lighting shining along the lump mood itself from the mass.
