Our firm created an amenity center on the seventh floor of 767 Third Avenue – a 40-story tower located in Midtown Manhattan near Grand Central Station – to be used by tenants for cultural and business events. The design team focused on making this space flexible and diverse for different uses including conferences, casual meetings, alternative work spaces, and settings for social events such as town halls and gatherings.

With the design concept being “an oasis in the desert,” our team was inspired by the volumetric, yet minimalist architecture found in the desert. Curvilinear walls and connecting ceilings create a sense of flow between the rooms and enhance the calming, monolithic feel of the space. Materials selected were meant to reflect the textures in the desert such as those of terra cruda and sandstone.

Infusing the amenity center with a hospitality feel transformed the space into a “home away from home” for officegoers. The space tells a story with the help of a deliberate color palette. A mix of sandy hues including oatmeal, ecru, macadamia, and camel contrast with rust tones and shades of green – all borrowed from the rocks, sands, and vegetation of the desert.

The amenity center features a large salon, perfect for conferencing or town halls. This space can be separated by glass doors for privacy and includes a lounge set-up along with a conference table and is designed to easily be transformed into a town hall setting.

Upon entering the lounge, guests are greeted with a midnight bar that is connected to the lounge area. The adjacent lounge area is also flexible with various configurations to accommodate differently sized groups for casual small meetings or individual break-outs. For private or evening events, large glass doors separate the space to transform it into an intimate setting. Deep green tones contrast with rust tones of the stone countertop foregrounded by textured handmade terracotta blocks. The bar ceiling has reflective elements to make the space feel bigger while the adjacent lounge features warm wood notes.

The library serves as a transitional space between the bar and lounge and the conference room, providing a quiet workspace. To achieve fluidity throughout the interiors, a series of pivoting doors allows tenants to either connect the library and the conference room or keep the spaces discrete.

Oasis at 767 Third is one of several Oasis projects in collaboration with Sage Realty. Looking at each space simultaneously allowed our design team to execute their ideas more sustainably. One of the benefits of a holistic approach was overlapping project timelines. Using the same contractor for each project, there was much less waste produced by our manufacturers. Being mindful in our choice of materials also enabled us to preserve elements of each existing space, such as the ceiling and mechanical ducting. We also reused existing spaces, such as the conference room and restrooms, and gave them updated finishes.
