NuBel is the new restaurant located in Jean Nouvel´s extension of the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid. When I considered what to do under Nouvel's bold “red sky”, I felt that my intervention would be sensual and feminine, vis-à-vis the strong presence of the bright ceiling and cold granite floor. The design floats, close to ground level: a garden of clouds (“nubes” in spanish). More than a "decoration" I designed a flexible fractal "system" to organize the space, and adapt to different needs. The fractal is a structure that repeats itself at different scales. In this case, the iterative element is the circle, as a unifying geometrical form, present in gastronomy, nature and architecture. Lighting and acoustics humanize the otherwise diaphanous open space. Built-in fixtures and movable custom furnishings produce varying degrees of intimacy and flexibility to adapt from casual seating to formal meals and large events. From the beginning I imagined a wide palette of overlapping colors and flavors, where different kinds of people could find delight in a welcoming space. Being at a museum, we also researched in art, choosing abstract paintings to reflect our atmosphere and colors. Color blends as in a watercolor, from blue in the exterior areas, through yellow, orange and green, to red and pink of the most intimate space in the restaurant, where the ceiling comes down and dyes everything with its redness.
