La Nouvelle Comédie is more than a theater : it is not only a place for performances, with its two halls, but also a place for creation, with its large construction workshops. By a subtile articulation of programs, the project generates a singular profile, a skyline, giving the building its identity, inventing a new typology for theaters. Where classical theaters distinguish the stage house as the central element of the building's composition, the crenellated profile expresses the multiplicity of activities housed in the new facility.
The theater is above all a place of exchange between artists and the public. If traditionally this exchange was limited to theatrical performances, for La Nouvelle Comédie the point was to design a more convivial space, a place that is alive all day, plural and dynamic. Creation activities are shown by visual transparencies, expressing the architectural vision of a contemporary theater open to the city.
The architecture, discreet and neutral during the day, expresses the character of a place of creation and production. In the evening, a light staging transforms the building in a performance place, affirming its presence in the city, and inviting the public to the magic of the show. La Nouvelle Comédie is designed as a hyperfunctional facility.
The circulation of people is organized with great rationality, distinguishing between the flow of the public, artists, technicians and administrative staff in order to give priority to the functionality of the building. The building accommodates two complementary halls. Each of them develops it's own identity, both from an architectural and scenography point of view. The greater hall is conceived in the continuity of the European theater, Italian style, with a pre-established front stage-hall relationship. The envelope is made of folded and faceted skin, like an origami, which acccommodates all the acoustic and lights devices specific to a theater hall. The modular black-box type hall is dedicated to experimentation.
An elementary and neutral volume, allow multiple configurations to be set up. The walls are covered with fiber-reinforced concrete slats, the patterns of which guarantees excellent acoustics. The two halls are highly technical spaces from a scenography point of view. The objective was to integrate all the technical requirements into the architectural expression while creating a poetic space able of welcoming the spectator by creating a break between everyday life and the magic of the show.
La Nouvelle Comédie is also a sustainable facility, designed to minimize its energy needs, with an efficient envelope and the bio-climatic management of large spaces, such as the hall and the galleries. The building is designed to cover all of its energy needs with renewable energies, and produces electricity by photovoltaic plant located on the roof.
