NOMURA Co., Ltd. is a company active in all areas of space creation, from planning and consulting to design, production, construction, and operation. Since its founding in 1892, the company has continuously provided “joy and inspiration” to numerous people through its space creation business. As the company celebrates its 130th anniversary, it embraces the challenge of exploring the unknown possibilities of space within a changing society and is committed to continuing to deliver “joy and inspiration” to people in the future.
Accordingly, NOMURA held an event to announce a new vision to all its employees and designed the space where it was held. Throughout our 130-year history, NOMURA has inherited knowledge, experience, and tradition from its esteemed predecessors and recognizes the importance of passing these assets along to future generations for further development. With this in mind, a design concept, “the flow of time,” was adopted for the event. The stage area consists of three large semi-circular stages of differing heights, each representing the past, present, and future. Furthermore, small circular stages surrounding the main stage area could serve as both stages and stairs, expanding the range of creative possibilities for the space. The stage performances on top of the stages expressed the past, present, and future through dance and planning, thus integrating spatial design and production.
The material selected for stage construction was lightweight steel, known as light gauge steel (LGS), often used for interior construction. For interior construction, scrap-and-build is carried out in a much shorter span of time than building construction, and a large amount of LGS is discarded each time. As LGS is a material often used for interior construction, instead of simply discarding it after dismantling the stage, we decided to reuse it as interior material in a different location for future space creation projects. By highlighting this base material, which is usually hidden out of sight, and revealing its inherent beauty, we are giving visitors an impression different from the one they had before.
Furthermore, by using LGS for the podium in addition to the stage, we intended to create an opportunity for discovering new possibilities for this material by using it in an unconventional way.
