The design of Dentons new space at No. 9 Haymarket set out to challenge the conventional approach to design for legal practices. Creating a familiar and relaxed experience that is both elegant and intuitive for users. It was important to Dentons for clients to WANT to use the space, encouraging them to enjoy the open plan bar, lounges and touchdown spaces, before, after and in-between meetings. So a visit is not just a business meeting, but an experience.
The concierge space offers a landing for both clients and colleagues that is like no other. Framed by oversized timber arches which serve as visual markers throughout the space. The various joinery elements cleverly hide practical feature’s such as coat cupboards and kitchen amenities. With a central bar area made from bespoke timber rods and solid terrazzo, it serves as a focal point for the day to day as well as staff and client events.
At the heart of the office space lies a refuge, away from the hustle and bustle of the main office. Nicknamed ‘The Rotunda’ it is a space to gather, to share and present ideas, or simply just to listen to others. An interaction point Dentons were keen to have for colleagues. The spaces around The Rotunda support a variety of other functions, quiet working, reflection, meeting or studying. The space was designed to constantly flow. Once you have used it for what you need, you move on. Non of these spaces are created with doors, but more a series natural screens that draw you in whilst providing visual and acoustic privacy from those working in the main office. A series of connected spaces that encourage users to explore and discover the deeper they venture into the space.
The materiality draws inspiration from both Scotlands abundant natural landscape through warm timbers and rich textured fabrics. Whilst balancing them against the warm colour palette and strong geometry of Edinburgh’s built environment in the various wall cladding and tiles used throughout the space. Creating a rich tapestry for Dentons latest and exciting space.
‘kin curated a photographic commission based on street photography of Edinburgh. Capturing day to day life through the eye of a 35mm camera. The raw and honest images capture a moment in time in the life of this beautiful and evocative city. The series of images create a gallery like effect throughout the new office space.
The FF&E was carefully selected to compliment the warm aesthetic concept. From the brushed brass on Rubn’s Angel Pendant to the textured solid glass of Rich Brilliant Willing’s Crisp Sconce. The product palette supports quality and precision as a cornerstone for the design.
BREEAM Excellent was a prerequisite for Dentons in this space. The supply chain was monitored and checked for their sustainability credentials, with as many local trades being used as possible. Others were selected for their use of electric vehicles for deliveries.
