Located in the city center of Hangzhou, also known as one of the fastest growing tech hubs of China, Night of City (NOC) combines various design and construction technologies, artistic expressions, and multi-disciplinary collaborations to create transcendental experiences within the 6,300-square-meter venue. The 46 generous, avant-garde private rooms combine live DJ, karaoke, gaming, dining, video, and performance arts, all within the privacy and security of individual rooms, a crucial design consideration for the post-pandemic era.

Inspired by the concepts of astral traveling and alternate realities, NOC began as an ambitious manifestation of an immersive, surreal, multi-purpose nightlife entertainment concept. One of the investigations is the seamless integration between the physical and virtual dimensions through numerous design, construction, and visual technologies. Utilizing organic metallic surfaces and kinetic mechanical structures, the spatial experience becomes a constant process of metamorphosis and transformation. Various specialized lighting effects and abstract visual animations displayed on custom high-resolution LED panels are choreographed to enhance all senses and imaginations.

As every room layout is different, a lot of research went into the explorations of material feasibility and precise construction for the curvilinear geometries. Main construction materials include glass-reinforced-gypsum (GRG), metallic-finish lacquer paint, raw matte concrete finish, custom-cut marble flooring, metal mesh, back-painted tempered glass, two-way mirror, textured wallpaper, custom ceramic tiles, brushed stainless steel and dark chrome panels, etc. Numerous 3D models were studied and printed to finalize panel shapes and joint details for manufacturing and on-site installations. Testing of components and prototypes for the kinetic mechanical structures were also performed to ensure overall precision and safety.

After over 6 months of design and coordination with various consultants, the construction began around the second half of 2020 during the pandemic. With regular on-site and online video supervisions for over a year during construction, the client, consultant and construction teams collaborated seamlessly to complete the ambitious project.

Since its opening in June 2022, NOC has quickly become one of the most popular entertainment venues among the trendy crowds in town. With consistent sales figures generated over 2 million USD a month, NOC is yet another successful achievement by the client team and everyone involved.
