Along the jungle-lined coast of Sayulita, Mexico—a bohemian surf town an hour north of Puerto Vallarta—is NICO, a large group hospitality experience with elevated suites, open-air common spaces, and boutique hotel-style comforts. Designed by Seattle-based architecture and development firm, HYBRID, in collaboration with Mexico City-based architecture firm, Palma, NICO offers an innovative lodging environment for design-minded families and friends. Available with customizable service amenities and brought to life with local craftspeople and artisans, NICO is the future of large group vacationing for locals and foreigners alike.

Hybrid’s Pacific Northwest projects are informed by natural materials and local artisanry, and their approach for NICO is no different. Hybrid and Palma called on regional craftspeople to construct NICO’s concrete and block infill frame—a nod to traditional Mexican architecture. Inside, everything from the wood furnishings to the built-in steel cabinets and custom light fixtures is handcrafted by emerging Mexico City artisans.

NICO’s natural environment also informs its design. Perched on steep terrain, NICO has ascending suites and shared spaces that skim the surrounding trees. With dense jungle at the bottom and treetop views on top, visitors can experience different vantage points from any level. All five stacked suites are complete with floor-to-ceiling windows and furnished with pared-down, natural materials like steel, wood, and concrete to not detract from the outdoor views. They are also air-conditioned and furnished with one-to-two beds, a private bathroom, kitchenette, and private lounge area. The ground level suite, dubbed the Jungle Suite, is encircled by native foliage and features a concrete built-in tub for a spa-like experience. The three ascending Terrace Suites are face-to-face with natural foliage, while the highest Horizon Suite sees over the treetops, capturing unobstructed views of the nearby beaches.

Visitors can use shared spaces on multiple levels of the property. An outdoor pool detailed with turquoise-colored tile is a splash of color within the concrete structure. The primary shared space is completely outdoors, featuring a fully stainless steel kitchen, lap pool, and wood plank decking reminiscent of a ship deck. The rooftop deck comes with colorful furniture to spur fun shared experiences among families, friends, and event guests.

Just minutes from Sayulita’s central square and steps away from the town’s famous beaches, NICO’s at the intersection of excitement and respite, adventure and relaxation—and this is echoed in its design. From luxurious concrete suites with built-in tubs to party-ready rooftop decks with furnishings by emerging Mexican designers, NICO offers a multifaceted experience for large group travel.
