The first museum in Japan with a “natural and environmental history” theme was established on the premises of a vacant prefectural high school in Shizuoka Prefecture, the home of Mt. Fuji. Natural and environmental history is a field that studies connections with nature and the environment as history, from the perspective of the life of human beings. This museum is intended to be a place for studying that history and considering the question “What is the wealth of nature? ”. For that reason, it does not feature exhibits that support conventional acquisition of knowledge, but rather aims to utilize the learning environment of the former school to offer “places of learning and thinking”, with the concept of cultivating human skills such as the ability to think autonomously and put knowledge into practice. This is aimed at creating a “THINKING MUSEUM (A museum that encourages thinking) ”.
