The hotel is located in Beijing-Fang, a redeveloped district in the heart of Beijing that maintained its traditional cityscape Hutong with an intricate system of back alleys. Inspired by the area, the hotel was designed to be open to the city and reflect its rich local culture.
The concept is “Anti-gorgeous, Anti-cheap”, and aims to evoke familiarity to its guests, like an extension of their home at their travel destination.

The guest rooms incorporate soft textures and utility of natural materials such as diatomite, hemp, cotton and stone, all traditionally used in Beijing. The interior feels spacious and unconstrained by minimizing partitions and a flat ceiling.

Using reclaimed bricks and timber from the area, as well as traditional Chinese bamboo materials, the vicinity of the hotel recreates the ambience of Lao-Beijing (Old Beijing), a neighboring historic district. MUJI products are displayed all around the 17m stairwell connecting the underground MUJI retail floor and the hotel. The transition from the shop to the lobby is smooth, with a hint of anticipation in every step.

With a gallery of exhibitions featuring local artists and workshops, a library filled with 8,000 books, and a restaurant on the top floor with an outdoor terrace onlooking the Tiananmen Square, the hotel attracts not only staying guests, but sightseers and residents too. Anyone can stop and enjoy Beijing-Fang’s local history and culture, and MUJI’s proposed lifestyle from every angle.
