The lattice made from Fuji cypress on the Exhibition Building exterior looks like an “inverted Fuji” which is reflected in the water basin beneath it to contrast and complement the actual Mt. Fuji. Inside the Exhibition Building a slope spirals upward, matching the contour of the exterior. It progresses through five areas corresponding to five elevations: Mt. Fuji from the Sea, From the Plain, the 5th Station, the Tree Line and the Summit. Each area is accompanied by sights and sounds from that elevation, recreating the spiritual experience of “Ascending Fuji.” At the top a trimmed picture window provides a view of the real Mt. Fuji. Descending, visitors pass through various exhibits, including “The Fierce Mountain” about Mt. Fuji the volcano, “The Sacred Mountain” about Mt. Fuji the sacred place, and “The Beautiful Mountain” about Mt. Fuji the source of artistic inspiration. Soil from Mt. Fuji is incorporated into the wall plaster, which is designed to look like a cross-section of Mt. Fuji, and a 4K movie theater free of narration and text is included; such elements present Mt. Fuji in a “raw” way, affording a new and visceral encounter with the many faces of Mt. Fuji on each visit.
