Mr Cake is a patisserie/café located in the heart of Stockholm. With a passion for craftsmanship and a love for Swedish café culture, MR Cake aims to offer something extra to all visitors. To achieve this “extra” our design was guided by words like joyful, unexpected, friendly, crafted and more is more. Translating these words into the physical environment to create a unique experience. The space introduces a new concept within its sector by integrating elements from pastry design into the interior aesthetics, alongside the bold use of colors. It challenges traditional norms and offers a fresh approach to the bakery sector in Stockholm.
Inspired by the craftsmanship our design reflects a commitment to precision and attention to detail. Using a visual language defined by curved lines and smooth contours, we aimed to draw parallels between MR Cake's pastries and the interior design elements. One key design element is the variety of tabletop materials, each providing a unique backdrop for the presented pastries and enhancing their presentation.
To achieve a cozy atmosphere in a large, open space with expansive windows in two directions posed a challenge. This we addressed by playing with the height through adding horizontal wall panels, light clusters and creating room divisions with seating arrangements. Given Sweden's long, dark winters, we paid extra attention to the light concept, opting for soft, warm lighting with subtle sparkling highlights to envelop visitors in warmth while accentuating the pastries.
Inspired by the airy texture of meringue, we selected lamps with shapes reminiscent of its whimsical swirls and delicate peaks. Each light source was strategically placed to highlight the pastries and create intimacy.
To define different functions and create a varied expression, we combined different materials and color combinations. The primary materials utilized include wood, Terrazzo, recycled plastic, metal, and faux leather. These durable materials minimize environmental impact and ensure resilience against wear and tear, promoting sustainability.
We designed the space with a keen focus on the customers’ needs and experiences. There is a seamless flow in the layout, facilitating easy navigation for customers, whether they're opting for dining-in or take-away. Flexibility in seating arrangements caters to various group sizes. Whether it is a cozy corner for intimate conversations or a communal table for larger gatherings. Additionally, features like a stair seating provides opportunities for solitary moments while still fostering a sense of connection. Customers can also opt for window seating, allowing them to gaze outside connecting to the urban setting. Simply a place of happiness and enjoyment both through its pastries and its interior ambiance.
