Designed to bring a traditional 1960s hotel located on the Croisette in Cannes back into a new cycle of life, the Mondrian Cannes celebrates the meeting of tropical modernism - a strong influence for the partners of French-Brazilian agency Triptyque - and the Riviera of the 60s.

The agency was commissioned to liven up the common areas. Imbued with a naturalist vitality, the re-design creates a dialogue between the sophisticated interiors and the gardens leading down to the Croisette, employing a palette that draws from the beauty of wood, marble, leather and plant fibers.

The rationalist design in reinforced concrete of the existing building has allowed for a free and sequenced occupation of its area, through fluidly arranged spaces marked by subtly curved contours and contemporary patterns.

The entrance, thought of as an alley in the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro, creates tension between the front garden and the park overlooking the Croisette and the sea. It celebrates the profoundly naturalistic nature of the project.

Adjoined by a Mediterranean park, all the spaces seek to maximise indoor/outdoor integration. This finds its climax in the organic development of the terrace and its intertwining with the garden.

The ensemble gives life to a visually unified space allowing free wandering that was designed to accommodate all forms of mobility in a ground floor space, undifferentiated and universal, which finds its most obvious expression in the configuration of the toilets and their fully automated large single basin.

Finally, we sought the maximum connection to nature in the technical solutions of the project, maximising the natural ventilation and illumination of all the spaces by taking advantage in particular of the breeze from the seafront. The same concern guided the choice of materials which are more than 80% natural (stone, wood, organic flexible materials).

The refined simplicity vibrates luxury imbued with “bossa”, a specifically Brazilian term that means “original and charming”. Echoing the waves, the sinuous furniture evokes the sea swell. A verdant haven right in the heart of the city.
