Amsterdam-based Marjan Sterk Gallery commissioned Tom Postma Design (TPD) to redesign their showroom in the heart of the Spiegelkwartier. The design of the boutique translates the detailed beauty of a ‘jewellery box’ into an inviting and comfortable space.
Innovation
A main challenge in the creative process was the limited space, requiring clever design interventions to strengthen both the practicality and aesthetic of the existing interior. TPD decided to reimagine the front and back rooms as one continuous space, gradually ranging from public to private. Accommodating the needs of both staff and clients, the integration of all functional zones within one furniture-like element allowed TPD to optimise the use of space in an innovative and visually appealing way.
Creativity
The gallery, situated at the front of the boutique, is surrounded by integrated in-wall showcases. Mirrored panels create an airier feel, lengthening and widening the intimate space. The shop window function has been retained to draw in passers-by and bring in natural light. A calm material palette of pink onyx, silk, oak and bronze conceal functional elements.
Functionality
The design provides an open, welcoming space with a hint of mystery, providing all the necessary requirements of the boutique within a calm and inviting setting. The bathroom, kitchenette, staircase and storage are carefully concealed in an oak-clad, neatly detailed unit to the rear of the space. The rigid volumes are softened by curved cut-outs; a subtle touch that breaks down the angularity and emphasises the intimacy of the backroom, reserved for staff and private client interactions.
Sustainability
Built to last, the use of natural, sustainable materials from local suppliers and craftsmen mean that this beautiful design will stand the test of time. Natural materials that wear well over time and can be easily maintained and repaired, coupled with a timeless aesthetic, assist in creating this inter-generational shop fitout.
