Bean Buro has transformed a workspace for a premier global financial institution in Hong Kong, illustrating a bold vision of a contemporary workplace. We developed a narrative that combines elements of heritage with modern design sensibilities. The design, spread across three storeys, embodies a human-centric approach, harmonising natural elements with advanced workplace principles to foster an environment that prioritises well-being and hospitality.
Central to the design is a striking hub on each floor, inspired by the essence of a "mangrove garden." This vibrant area features tropical flora and incorporates structural elements that evoke the unique aesthetics of mangrove trees, imbuing the workspace with energy and character. These sculptural forms not only serve as visual focal points but also anchor bespoke seating arrangements, nurturing a culture of social interaction and collaboration among employees.
The design seeks to increase engagement through interactive art installations, collaborating with local artists, including Angel Hui. These site-specific artworks, ranging from colourful trinkets to dynamic neon wall statements, celebrate local culture and contribute to communal spaces that promote social media interaction and encourage creativity among workers. This infusion of art injects playfulness and enhances the sense of community within the space.
An immersive design strategy envelops the broader office areas, characterised by bespoke lighting that plays across a timber-clad ceiling, guiding movement and enhancing the overall user experience. Amenities are thoughtfully positioned to complement the workspace, facilitating a seamless flow that brings teams together.
The use of materials and colours plays a critical role in crafting a lively atmosphere, where the organisation's signature red is reinterpreted within a diverse palette, challenging traditional corporate aesthetics and promoting a spirit of innovation.
Sustainability is a cornerstone of the design ethos, featuring repurposed furnishings and bio-based wall finishes that not only minimise environmental impact but also elevate the well-being of the occupants. Much of the finishes and furniture are responsibly constructed with recycled materials and designed to be recyclable at the end of their life cycle. The layout optimises natural daylight, enhancing the well-being of the team and reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day, thus saving energy. This also helps to manage solar heat gain, lessening the reliance on artificial cooling and heating.
The project ensures that every choice supports the health of both the environment and its inhabitants. Mangrove Garden reflects Bean Buro's passion for workplace designs that support employee well-being while celebrating local culture and sustainability.
