Tuckey Design Studio has revealed the latest collaboration with international skincare brand, Malin+Goetz; a new store in London’s most iconic shopping district, Soho.

The boutique is located on Berwick Street, a traditional market thoroughfare that epitomises Soho’s bustle and charm. The store has been designed to serve as an antithesis to traditional retail architecture; its wasteful and transitory nature is challenged by a conscious arrangement of low-carbon, off the shelf materials that allow the space to be easily adapted for future use. Addressing the impermanence of retail design, Jonathan Tuckey Design has used stock materials for the store’s lightweight construction to ensure their reusability in alternative future contexts.

The integration of bespoke, modular shelving, worktops and displays has been heavily influenced by the distinct grid layout within the Malin+Goetz visual identity. Square-cut, solid pine battens converge to form substantial trunks bound by metal tape. Elegant aluminium shelves offset the visual weight of the columns from which they stem, interlocked to avoid the need of folding and welding. Recycled pulp panelling creates a subtle textural backdrop to the renowned Malin+Goetz perfumes, candles and cosmetics.

Similar in approach to the studio’s work across the Islington, Seven Dials, Spitalfields and Canary Wharf stores, the internal design of the new Soho store is informed by the traditional role of an apothecary and reflects a sensitive consideration of context. Lightweight, modular structures echo the market scene outside, constructed to be quickly assembled and easily demounted to establish a versatility to the store's character.

Customers are guided through the interior by bespoke furniture made from solid ash. Centrally positioned between the tables is a protruding consultation area. A floating stainless-steel tap nods to Soho’s glamour, suspended from the ceiling to float above an inset sink which is softly illuminated by a lighting fixture with the brand’s ‘+’ motif.

The gridded timber columns ascend to meet green acoustic baffles that span the ceiling. This contrast of organic materiality and geometric forms reflects the area’s dense urban structure that threads between the greenery of nearby Soho Square.

Malin+Goetz’s Soho store is defined by a set of unique structures created from universal materials that can be adjusted, transported and recycled for new life. This responsible and conscious approach to retail design embodies the studio’s commitment to balance a sense of heritage with sustainable and contemporary design.
