Maialino Mare, the coastal sister to Danny Meyer’s original Maialino in New York City, is the newly opened 3 meal restaurant in the Thompson Hotel Washington DC. The inspired menu has a focus on coastal Italian cuisine with seafood-forward pastas and other seasonally inspired dishes that not only pay homage to its Italian roots but also to the waterfront concept of the hotel itself. The design references tradition and history but is rooted in the local metropolitan area of Washington DC creating a unique position within the newly built hotel. The Roman-style trattoria encompasses both a modern sensibility and traditionally applied moments such as the high wainscot and artwork collections adorning the walls. The design references a seaside connection that is not only inspired by the cuisine but the subtle nautical cues from the architecture and the location near the waterfront of the historic Navy Yards. Blue leather booths and terracotta flooring from Italy provide a welcoming entrance to the space, inviting guests in with an offering of hospitality and warmth. Custom hand crafted light fixtures combined with rich blue leathers and warm wood tones complement the harder finishes of tile and wood while the layout caters to every need from coffee bar at the front, centralized bar dining and booth seating while the white table cloths and more formal dining setting is positioned at the back against a backdrop of wine and hand selected artwork. Parts and Labor's goal was to create a setting that would allow the public to dine in a relaxed but elevated atmosphere surrounded by artwork and earthy materials. A place that feels like home, calling you back through comfort and familiarity. Encouraging a tactile engagement with objects that require one to slow down, and remain in the moment. Developing a neutral palette that allows focus to fall on the plate in front of you while maintaining a high level of craft and maker focused design we created an interior that is subtle in approach but worthy of recognition. Bringing a local feel from the streets of Rome to the DC waterfront, we sought to breathe life into this New York City restaurant concept and transplant it with fresh roots to Washington DC. Radiating warmth and light we created a place that feels like home, a welcoming space with a nod to the past, Maialino Mare is a classic trattoria reimagined.
