M2 Art Centre is an art space that originates from the function of displaying wedding dresses. Located in Hangzhou, China, it now serves as a popular venue for portrait photography, exhibitions, and hosting perfomance arts and fashion events.
Wedding culture were an important part of this space. The design team SpActrum intends to bring about a reflection on the understanding of women and marriage choice withtin this design, hoping that the spatial experience at M2 would not be a preconceived indulgence, but rather a journey that would inspire women's self-awareness and self-care.
The site was originally a fitness club with a sunken swimming pool located in a high-rise commercial building. The main space was a long rectangular area over 40 meters long, centered around the swimming pool. The floor was partially sunken about 1.5 meters, and the end was a high space with a height of 10 meters. SpActrum combines the sunken ground and the suspended irregular curved surfaces to maximize the utilization of the space, enhancing interaction between the tall narrow space and people, and reinforcing the dynamic nature of the space created by its unique characteristics.
Departing from the elevator hall, the pathway leads into a dark, enigmatic space where giant black stones float. In the main hall, the inverted valley hangs upside down and twists and turns. The steps extend downwards until they intersect on both sides, forming a pool. At the end of the pool, the steps continue to extend upwards, forming an aerial altar, which is located under the dome. Then, the holy light descends and flickers at the highest point of the entire space.
Aesthetically, the interior flooring uses a highly rational language, with white marble resembling a temple, echoing rational moments and civilization throughout human history. The inverted irregular curved surfaces resemble overlapping mountains, representing nature. The inverted state provides a sense of association with another world, as if people are landing in a temple on an alien planet.
Specific materials and techniques are used: the GRG and GRP shaping techniques meet the possibilities of all curved surfaces to realize the design: the use of white marble echoes classical architecture, while the extensive use of light films brings an endless sense of space. All the materials used to shape the curved surfaces in the project are produced by wax molding. Wax, which is used as a mold, can be fully recycled and reused, contributing to the project's sustainability during the construction process.
Due to its extraordinary potentials and fantastic spatial experiences, M2 has transformed itself from a wedding dress showroom to a popular venue for portrait photography, exhibitions, performance arts, fashion events,etc.. The result is a space that offers a concentrated and profound spiritual experience, and provides Hangzhou a trendy platform for various new ideas, aesthetics, arts to be communicated and promoted.
