The apartment just outside the gates of Berlin is the third apartment in a row that studio karhard® has designed together with the resident. The space in which the apartment is located is history-charged, it is part of a former sanatorium. The rooms are characterized by existing tile coverings, cross-degree vaults and existing door systems with curved profiles. For the use of this unit the resident's requirements for a sports corner, a media room, bedroom and guest room, an opulent bathroom and the possibility of exhibiting a lot of art have been taken into account. Studio karhard has developed a color and material concept that incorporates and interprets the existing surfaces and developed a sophisticated overall solution from this. The kitchen consists of elements with a frame structure with partially concentrated wooden surfaces and partially rolled metal surfaces. In the kitchen there is a fireplace made of color-coordinated brick. For the bathroom floor wall tiles made of blue glazed lava stone slabs have been used. The use of the rooms of a former sanatorium for residential purposes posed a particular challenge, as the rooms have capped ceilings and an existing tile covering that had to be integrated into the design. Many listed objects also had to be preserved. The usage concept can certainly be described as innovative and creative. In addition to the kitchen, bedroom and living room, the apartment has its own sports studio with a free weight area and highly specialized sports equipment. There is an open fireplace in the kitchen and the living room is mainly used for listening to music. A detailed furnishing and color concept has been worked out with the resident, which even took into account the resident's art collection. All built-in furniture was specially made or provided with selected upholstery and fabrics or even developed from scratch A special feature is certainly the lattice gate which is used as a decorative burglar protection between the house door and the second door and which can be folded on the walls with double pivot points. In the rooms with capped ceilings, lighting fixtures had to be mounted on the steel girders of the ceilings for this purpose, own luminaires have been designed including a fastening option for the ceilings steel girders. The colors of the wall tiles in the kitchen area have been matched to the existing tiling and put together by the interior designers to create a mural.
