The project starts by analysing the place and its identity through the set of historical, socio-cultural, architectural, communicative and behavioural characteristics that distinguish it. In this sense, the history of Predappio, the territory on which the project stands, has a strong and characterising legacy that must absolutely be taken into account. Martin Heidegger wrote that the organisational spatial model of most architecture tends to produce a condition of alienation to the inhabitants.
Instead, all human actions should necessarily find the right place to happen. It was therefore necessary to avoid the creation of a classic non-place, a space of transit, crossing, designed for a generic identity that does not seek identity spaces; designing means building a relational identity and historical place in which users can identify themselves with.
The project ‘Locanda Appennino’ does not betray Genius Loci, the deity protector of a place and of those who lived in it, as it develops on the basis of the architecture connected to the historical and social moment, that still lives after a century, in the minds, memories, and souls. The project develops with an innovative twist by overcoming the still and peremptory rigor of the architecture of that period, by taking a journey through time and unfolding itself with a modern accent, without forgetting the essence that gave birth to it.
The functionality of the project is linked to the various activities; daytime services, evening dining-bar, a self refrigerated wine cellar and rooms for the lodgers.
Located in Predappio, a small town with an audience that is slowly getting used to the news, here spaces create a sensory experience increasing value of the services and consequently to the place. The perceived quality of the venue and its products depends precisely on the ability to create value, combining quality with a memorable experience. This is the most important differentiator in a market where the quality of the product and service is often taken for granted.
The project stems from the 20’s rationalistic philosophy, generated by the Genius Loci that strongly hovers in the historical and architectural context of the area. We renewed this style with greater modernity and adapt it to the projects functionality. Rationalism bases its philosophy on the rational analysis of the functionality and usefulness of what is designed and built. Its geometric language, doesn’t grant concessions to decorations, but instead essential forms and rigor, a dynamic continuity between outside and inside but, above all, it must be attentive to social, economic aspects and improve life’s quality as a whole.
This project has developed and modified taking into account the economic, constructive and, functional logics that are of primary importance in a place where people work and welcome others.
