The minimalist design of the 1300 square meters makes for architecture design studio within the workplace perfect for architects’ daily work, meeting, exhibition and events. It is renovated from the ladder classroom and dormitory of an old campus in the center of the city. As an adaptive practice, this project aims to reutilize an artifact of urban excess and create new office space. Firstly, take the external staircase as the main entrance and create a courtyard within the old trees next to it, adding hierarchy and identification to the space. The heart of the dormitory plan is partition wall and column. Demolish the partition walls between columns and keep all the existing concrete post and beam construction intact, even to celebrate them by leaving them fully exposed, thus forming an open and free office space. For public spaces, inject the flexible genes into meeting room, model room, office kitchen and terrace to inspire these young architects everywhere. To maximize the potential of the ladder classroom, the space at the back is for meeting, and the front space may be multifunctional area for exhibition, salon, lecture, entertainment and events. The cool concept is also expressed throughout the project via the materiality, art and color palette. Plain polished concrete is used to form a system with the concrete structure and roof texture. The modern, soft, and elegant metal mesh extending inward from the entrance is used as ceiling decoration and shelf, visually revealing the rough and delicate space. Based on the interior renovation design, we reimaging the existing building façade and expressed it with black box window, which displays the models and introduces more sunlight inwards. Just as importantly, it makes the unique identity and domain of the studio.
