Our project is a complete interior renovation of an existing 1980 3-story single family home located in Seattle WA. USA. Owners Tom and Jen bought this home expressly because of the unique qualities, reminiscent of the economical vernacular found throughout the West Coast from the 1970's-1980's. Our design approach pays homage to the original house’s era and amplifying it's more iconic and playful qualities through the use of bold colors, shapes and graphics, applied in a nod to the expressive supergraphics by Barbara Solomon found at the Sea Ranch. We enhanced the interconnection of volumes, using translucent materials and by creating new openings between various rooms and floors. In doing so, we created better connections throughout the house; between rooms and floors in this compact and vertical 3-story home. Using economical materials such as polycarbonate, natural wood and applied colors in paint, tile and wallpaper, we were able to create a house with distinct qualities that interplay with each other.
