-Background
This project is a continuation of a new project we have been working on called "Invisible Development" as part of the Arario Tapdong Project on Jeju island, which is gradually expanding its development area.
This time, we designed a concept store for KOLON SPORT, an outdoor brand whose main motto is the concept of sustainability and the brand that takes discarded clothing from its inventory and then up-cycles them. The identity of the brand is "to rethink a new perception of what is thrown away.
-Background of the store design
We inherited the brand value of upcycling discarded inventory and focused on the local environmental issues in Jeju. Among them, we found that about 20,000 tons of marine debris is incinerated annually on the island of Jeju with no way to be reused, which leads to the destruction of the rich natural environment of Jeju, so we experimented with using marine debris to make clothing brand fixtures.
By upcycling discarded marine debris and turning it into fixtures, we tried to link the brand's value of sustainability. The process of creating the fixtures was actually a process of walking along the coast of Jeju and directly collecting discarded marine debris such as buoys and plastics, which were then upcycled into hangers, shelves, and tables to complete the original marine debris fixtures. This space is not only for the tenants, but also for the regeneration of the entire town, so we modified the space to make it look attractive not only for the tenants, but also for the typical commercial building that contains these tenants.
First, to create an invisible change, we removed the existing signage so that the building appears to be an all-in-one building from the building façade. This made it appear that the boundaries of each area were not visible from the outside and that somewhere in the corner of the building, the boundary of this building was collapsed and the tenants were connected to each other.
The existing openings to the exterior were extended and the existing infill was removed to maximize the exposure of the structure. Minimizing conventional deformation while reducing waste of space and resources, naturally guided the connection and expansion of tenants into the future.
-Meaning of the project
The KOLON SPORT SOTSOT REBIRTH project is not limited to the renovation of a commercial space as an up-cycling brand, but also aims to break down the space's own territory and gradually spread the brand value to the town and local area. Therefore, we experimented to expand the possibility of environmental sustainability by creating a sustainable base for stores and preserving the nature of Jeju island, which is famous for its unique natural landscape and biodiversity.
