Kita-Horie, Osaka, where Kitahorie Seseragi Daycare Center is located, is not far from Shinsaibashi, where urbanization continues to progress and there is a rush to build housing complexes targeting families. The lack of relationships between the people who have lived there for a long time and the people who have newly started living there has become a local problem. Houseikyou (a service organization of Yatsumitake Shrine), based in the area, is tackling such issues.
1. innovation
The project innovates by reusing the space of a traditional shrine and incorporating a multipurpose space that functions not only as a nursery school but also as a meeting place for the local community. Particularly noteworthy is the design, where local festivals and daily activities coexist, adapting local heritage to contemporary needs. This is an attempt to utilize existing cultural and physical resources and adapt them to contemporary lifestyles, rather than simply building new facilities.
2. functionality
The nursery has been strategically designed to maximize its functionality. For example, the ground floor serves as a plaza, but is also used as a car park for the nursery when required. Each floor of the nursery is arranged with the safety and development of children of a particular age group in mind, reducing the risk of accidents while still providing the space needed for children's activities. Such a design enhances the efficiency of daily operations and allows a variety of activities to take place at the same time.
3. creativity
Creativity is evident through the color design of the interior and exterior of the nursery. The use of green, which mimics the colors of nature, for the exterior and bright, active orange for the interior stimulates children's sensitivity and creativity. Furthermore, open terraces and gardens have been incorporated into the design to provide an environment where children can interact with nature and experience the changing seasons.
4. sustainability
The project provides a platform for old and new residents to interact with each other and create a sustainable community. By utilizing the grounds of the shrine, the project links local history with modern life and encourages intergenerational interaction. By making it function as a public space, it also creates a natural environment for local residents to gather, thereby contributing to the building of a sustainable community. This strengthens bonds within the community and improves long-term livability and a sense of belonging to the area.
