Located in a dense forest by a lake in Shunyi, Beijing, this project involves renovating a Prairie-style villa with an inner corridor linking several rooms. The building features two interior heights: 4.8 meters and 3.5 meters. The transformation aims to accommodate bookstore, restaurant, gallery, and office within the space.

The current brick-concrete structure requires careful internal space planning while preserving original load-bearing walls and facade openings. We repurposed the higher foyer, living room, and dining room as the entrance lobby, reading area, and coffee area, respectively. The three lower rooms now serve as the children's bookstore, providing a quiet and private space. This setup allows both the architecture and children's bookstores to operate under the same roof, each with its own spatial logic: continuous and extroverted for the architecture bookstore, and introverted for the children's bookstore, creating a harmonious blend.

Entering from the porch to the lobby, the view extends to the courtyard through the restaurant's wall window, adding depth. Picture windows in the southwest corner were removed, while others were replaced with folding doors for courtyard access. The south window now serves as the reading area of the architecture bookstore, enhancing the space with a relaxed ambiance. The openable facade extends spatial continuity to the courtyard. The architectural bookstore features a wooden ceiling, contributing to its calming atmosphere, with air-conditioning and other equipment discreetly embedded between ceiling plates.

From the lobby, a corridor leads to the children's bookstore, featuring wooden wainscoting for a warm and cozy atmosphere. Originally three bedrooms, we reorganized the space by removing bathroom walls. Wooden bookshelves line the walls, with benches by the windows and low tables and bookcases in the middle, creating an introverted and inviting ambiance. Whether sitting by the window or under the lamp, the space feels comfortable and relaxing. We designed the furniture and lighting fixtures, including a large pendant lamp crafted from galvanized steel, providing soft illumination throughout the room at night.

The bookshelf continues our previous design for the first Juanzong bookstore, featuring its own illumination for a tidy ceiling without spotlights. For the children's bookshelf, we prioritized easy access to books, designing the penultimate layer as a "skimming-reading dock" for thicker books, while higher layers display books with covers facing outward for browsing. The bottom layer accommodates dense book placement. A curved cantilever plate with embedded lighting extends from the top, providing soft illumination for reading and display.
