You only have to see first-hand the incredible skill, attention to detail and passion involved in making a pair of Joseph Cheaney & Sons' shoes, to realise it truly is an art.

This project marks the brand’s arrival to Henrietta Street, seeing them join an exclusive range of independent retailers in an area full of historic character and energy. In the space, multiple key signatures come together to re-tell the story of the ‘art of the shoemaker’; capturing the spirit of Joseph Cheaney with a beautifully analogue experience that honours the process of handcrafted luxury. Together these elements form a contemporary interpretation of craftsmanship and heritage.

• Drawing board displays are used for ‘hero’ window displays and in-store merchandising. The backlit and cantilevered stands appear to float in space, presenting shoes as exhibits, while nodding to the act of designing and crafting shoes. Each panel has been individually made, with shoemakers’ tools and brogue patterns cut out of the drawing board surface to reveal hand finished Cheaney leathers and suedes mounted behind.

• A feature canopy of 35 pendant lights draws attention to the height of the ceilings, with moulded leather lampshades that have been burnished and polished at Joseph Cheaney’s factory in Desborough. This pays homage to the steaming process where shoe leather uppers are hung, ready to later be stretched and moulded around the shoe lasts.
